Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
Your Clearer
Future Starts Today

If you're over 50 and tired of reaching for readers, squinting at menus, or struggling to see clearly at night, you're not alone. These changes are a normal part of how our eyes age — but that doesn’t mean you have to accept them.

At ORA Vision, we offer Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) — a safe, proven, and permanent solution designed to restore your visual freedom and eliminate the need for cataract surgery down the road.

Why Your Vision Is Changing

As we age, the natural lens inside our eyes becomes stiffer, thicker, and eventually cloudier. This can lead to:

  • Constantly switching between different pairs of glasses
  • Difficulty seeing up close
  • Glare or halos from oncoming headlights
  • Trouble driving comfortably at night

These frustrating changes are often caused by presbyopia (age-related near vision loss) or early cataract development. But there’s good news — RLE can correct these changes, helping you see clearly again and preventing cataracts from forming later in life.

What Is Refractive Lens Exchange?

RLE is a 15-minute outpatient procedure that replaces your eye’s aging natural lens with a clear, artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). It’s nearly identical to cataract surgery — the main difference is that it’s done before cataracts significantly affect your vision.

Each eye is typically treated about a week apart, and most patients notice clearer vision within just a few days. Benefits of RLE include:

  • Clear vision at near, mid, and far distances
  • Reduced or eliminated need for glasses or readers
  • No future cataract surgery
  • Sharper, brighter vision with fewer night-time halos or glare

Are You a Candidate for RLE?

You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Are over 50
  • Rely on readers, bifocals, or progressives
  • Want to avoid cataract surgery in the future
  • Have been told LASIK isn’t an option for you
  • Have early signs of cataracts or presbyopia

Even if you’ve had LASIK in the past, RLE can be the next step in your vision journey.

Multifocal Lenses –
All-Distance Vision

Imagine life without the constant hassle of switching glasses—or the ongoing cost of prescription lenses. At ORA Vision, we offer multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs)—advanced lenses that help you see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances after cataract surgery or lens replacement.

Fewer Glasses, More Freedom

Unlike standard lenses that correct only distance vision, multifocal IOLs reduce the need for bifocals, trifocals, or progressive glasses. Multifocal IOLs can correct vision at a wide range of distances: near, far, and everything in between. Many patients enjoy reading, working, and driving without constantly reaching for their glasses.

  • Provide clear vision at near, mid, and far distances
  • Help significantly reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals
  • Great for active individuals who want to stay glasses-free
  • Some patients may notice halos or glare around lights at night (typically temporary)

Invest in Your Vision—and Your Wallet

While multifocal IOLs involve an upfront investment, they can save you money over time. Think about the ongoing expenses for prescription bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses:

  • Frequent prescription changes as your eyes age
  • The cost of multiple pairs of glasses for different activities
  • Designer frames and specialty lens coatings

Multifocal IOLs help reduce or eliminate these ongoing costs, making them an investment in both your vision and your wallet. Multifocal lenses are best for motivated patients who have a strong enough desire to be glasses-independent to tolerate some mild halos at night.

Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) –
The Most Personalized Vision Option Available

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only lens option on the market that allows us to design, trial and customize your vision after RLE surgery. The power of the lens will be fine-tuned for your individual vision goals with light treatments after surgery. The adjustability takes cataract surgery to the next level by giving you a lens customized specifically for your eyes. The result is extraordinarily clear 20/20 vision in the great majority of patients.

The light adjustable lens does require a greater commitment from you. Because ultraviolet light changes the lens power, you will need to wear UV protective glasses provided by us until the final lock-in treatments are completed. The LAL requires three to four extra visits to our office to fine tune the vision with laser treatments.

  • The only lens that can be adjusted after surgery to fine-tune your vision
  • This is the only lens that also allows you to try your vision and make adjustments based on your lifestyle
  • After healing, UV light treatments are performed in-office to personalize your outcome
  • Especially helpful for patients with previous LASIK, high prescriptions, or unique visual demands
  • Can deliver excellent distance and near vision with minimal compromises
  • Ideal for patients who want precision, flexibility, and long-term satisfaction

Extended Depth-of-Focus (EDOF) Lenses –
Smooth, Natural Transitions

EDOF lenses are designed to give you a continuous range of vision—especially for distance and intermediate tasks like driving, computer work, or cooking.

Benefits of  EDOF lenses

  • Offer a continuous range of vision, especially at far and intermediate distances
  • Less night-time halos or glare compared to multifocal IOLs
  • Ideal for patients who prioritize clarity, contrast, and comfort in everyday tasks

Who’s a good candidate for an EDOF lens?

  • Patients who want more freedom from glasses, especially for everyday activities
  • People who spend a lot of time on screens or need good intermediate vision
  • Those who are okay with possibly still needing reading glasses for very fine print

It’s important to know that no lens is perfect. With EDOF lenses, the trade-off is that while you get excellent distance and intermediate vision, you might still need reading glasses for small print, and some people may notice halos or glare around lights at night—but typically less than with some multifocal lenses.
